This archive might look familiar to anyone who has viewed my "Prototype 55 gallon poly drum post", http://infiniteaquaponics.blogspot.com/2013/04/prototype-55-gallon-poly-drum-and.html. That is because this was the inspiration for that system. This is one of the few archived designs that I will share that made it into existence.

My goal with this design was to make a functioning aquaponics system out of one 55 gallon polyethylene drum. Most all of the designs for this type of system on the internet just cut the top third off, flip it over and set it on top of the bottom part. This creates a couple problems in my opinion. It makes it very difficult to access the fish and equipment and your fish tank capicity is reduced because you have to cut a huge opening at the top of the fish tank to have access to them. With my design, the use of a simple frame elevates the grow bed and eliminates these problems. Since the grow bed is directly above the fish tank it makes an areal view of the fish near impossible. For this reason and just to have a cool underwater view of the fish I incorporated a small acrylic fish viewing window. All it takes to power this system is a 160 GPH pump that you can buy on Amazon for $15. If you wish to have a fairly high stocking density, it would be wise to put a couple air stones in the fish tank as well. So with the drum, metal, paint for the frame and all plumbing and pump, you can build this entire system for just over $100. Its a great little starter system.

Let me know what you guys think and if you have any design inputs in the comments. I spend a lot of time making these and every model is to scale and every measurement is exact. You can literally open the file, use the measuring tool and get every exact measurement you need to build this unit. I will put the link to download the SketchUp file at the bottom of the post. If you choose to download the file or if you just like the blog and would like to see more stuff like this, please leave a comment or share the blog on one of the social media site links below. It really helps me out and the more the blog grows, the more cool stuff Ill be able to share with you. (Build it at your own risk of course, Im not your daddy nor am I responsible for you. These are just fancy drawings and I cant guarantee they will work, they are here to try to help you out in your aquaponic endeavors)
Hope you enjoy!
