Good Reads Aquaponics and Bio filters

Haji Anwar from Dengkil directed me to this website. I read through several articles and found them to be superbly enlightening!

Everyone involved or plan to get involved in aquaculture or aquaponics should read these two articles:

Great article on Aquaponics: Aquaponics Information from www.growfish.com

Great article on Biofilter: Biofilters from www.growfish.com

If you dont have time to read these lengthy article allow me to summarize it for you:

Growfish expressed the thought that many so-called aquaponics experts are not very knowledgeable on fish rearing. The most important thing about fish rearing is in fact, the filtration system. According to them the solid wastes shouldnt get into the aquaponics system. Wow...thats an eye opener right? I see a lot of system actually do well with the concept of filling the gravel beds with solid fish wastes. Perhaps theyll work better when we take out the solids? Perhaps its also the reason why people put in earthworms into the gravel beds. How would we tailor the filtration system for a system like mine and Haji Anwars? I think Ill have to prevent all solids wastes from our gutters.

Growfish did mention that sufficient ammonia is already present in the water alone and that the solids waste should go through a digester system and keep the circulation of the fish and plant system separately. Ok this is getting too hard now, I might not have the time and expertise to develop such things so Im just gonna keep it simple and try to trap the solid wastes. Growfish also mentioned that some university folks told them that recirculating the water through plants and back into the pond is kinda like processing our household water through some filtering and back into our house for consumption, if we wont do that why would we do it to the fish?...thats a bit hard to accept. Id have to say I dont really buy that since what were doing is mimicking the environment. All were doing is removing some nutrients in the water through the plants, for me even if the plant part doesnt remove all the nutrients, the rain which comes in topping off the water should keep everything in balance right?

Honestly, the information I got from the article overwhelms me...as if the whole thing were doing is not the right way...They even said that the system such as the one Affnan is running at the moment will fail (simple water into gravel tubs)...Though I do agree and disagree with some parts of the article, I still think its a good read...you should read em too!

Cheers!
