I had some trouble with my system after the first harvest; a lot of patin died. Now, all 35 have died while I was away in Kemaman. The situation was reported by my brothers and during that week the weather was quite hot. I personally didnt think that the heat could affect the fish until they could die because Ive never had the water warmed up during the day because the whole system is under 90% shade material. So I can rule the heat out of the cause.

Secondly, prior to leaving for Kemaman, I have harvested about 2/3 of my plants which are pakchoy and kailan. Just for the record my mom told me that they were very sweet with no bitterness at all so I guess this system is working well. Thus, my second theory of fish loss; imbalance in the system which causes nitrate buildup. I have no nitrates measurement during this time so I may never be able to prove it, however I have read on some blogs and forums that nitrates concentration needs to be really high in about 150ppm to cause severe damage. Could it be that the decrease of a quarter tank of water level combined with the harvesting of plants have caused such high nitrates level? I dont know. Perhaps one of you readers could help me out.

My third theory will be the best I could lean upon. I have used some water based household mosquito aerosol to combat these bugs that are raised and harvested by ants on the long bean plants. Yes, they raise those bugs an harvest them. However damaging to plants that it killed all three of my dwarf long beans that was starting to fruit!!!

Close up shot of the bugs. Anyone know or had any experience with these bugs?

Another shot of the bugs attacking the long bean fruit, they also attack the flowers of the plant

Overuse of such substance have been proven to be fatal to fish as a fellow aquaponian Abd Rashid have discovered. His carps died due to overuse of aerosol. I suspect that the impact it had on my system has caused the damage which results in my patin dying but fortunately the tilapias are very robust. I must say...it is about time to try that onion-chilli-garlic-oil concoction on these bugs. Of all the plants I have, they seem to only attack the long bean plants, garden-wide...What should I do? No more insect aerosol should be applied for sure.

Upon coming back home from Kemaman, Ive been looking at the situation and looking for the solution to this problem. EC meter reading showed 0.65 which is the highest Ive seen with my system (also a sign of maturing) and after I performed the 50% water change to suppress the aerosol effect it went to 0.45. Since there are many theories; 1) excess heat, 2) imbalance of system due to harvest, 3) usage of aerosol on bugs. The plants seem to be affected as well. The kailans are really stunted. Let me know if you have any thoughts on this!

CURRENT SOLUTION:

To combat the issue of harvesting, I have added more pots to the growbeds. Also, to dilute the aerosol substance in the water (not that I sprayed it directly in the water) I have performed a 50% water change.

Previous setup of growbeds...

Additional pots on each row. Spacing based on the previous harvest of kailan and pak choy

Im also trying out this new concept of growbed. Tried out one row of pots. If you want to try this out with the 5.5" common UPVC gutter, the pots are Baba RD-150 (150 mm) size

Ive sown some seeds after the improvement project and they seem to germinate fine. The previous sprouts have to be thrown away as they really looked like they werent gonna make it.

Thanks for your time! Id really appreciate it if you could leave your precious comments!
