Yard Waste Composter

This doesnt really have anything to do with aquaponics, but I thought I should share it anyway. I figure most people interested in aquaponics are also interested in things like homesteading, urban farming and permaculture. If youve been thinking about starting a compost pile, this is a great way to do it. All it takes is 72 old bricks you probably have laying around in your backyard. If you dont, it is usually quite easy to find someone on Craigslist who is giving away old bricks.

Use 8 bricks and make a circle that is 3 feet across. Leave a few inch gap between each brick so the pile can stay well aerated. After you lay your first circle of bricks, stack 7 more levels on top of it. Stagger each level so every brick connects the two bricks below it. I had 8 extra bricks when I was done so I added a ninth level of bricks, but 8 levels will work too. Thats it, it shouldnt take more than 30 minutes to get it all set up. The only thing thats left is to start filling it.

Even if you are only putting your grass clippings and piles of leafs in it, your going to be able to make some good compost.(make sure your not adding anything with chemical fertilizers on them) Every few days turn the pile a couple times and spray it with a hose to keep it moist. In a few weeks, take that wonderful smelling warm compost and put it in your soil garden.

So, not only can you make this for free, it will make free and all natural fertilizer that your plants will love. You can even get rid of your city yard waste container and save a little money each month. If you want to get really fancy, heres a great book on composting:
