This is the second installment of my SketchUp Archives. This system would be for someone who wants to take their aquaponic endeavor to the small commercial scale without having to spend a fortune building their system. You could potentially build this entire setup for less than $2,000 (I price out all my systems based off of online prices for tanks and Home Depot lumber and hardware prices). For that price you could have a 350 gallon fish tank, four 16 sq ft media grow beds and a 4 foot by 20 foot by 16 inches deep DWC trough (about 900 gallons).
There is on pump in one end of the DWC trough and it pumps water into the fish tank. The fish tank over flows into the 4 media grow beds. The water from all 4 grow beds is routed into the DWC trough opposite of the pump. The water then slowly flows through the trough to the pump and the process is repeated. The system would work perfectly fine as is up to a certain stocking density. If you had a very high stocking density you could run in to clogging problems where the fish tank water enters the grow beds. (with a single point of entry this can even happen at relatively low stocking densities) This problem could easily be addressed by the addition of an in-line filter that the water could pass through prior to the grow beds. This would remove a large amount of suspended solids from the water. This will allow you clean out your media grow beds less often. You also get the added benefit of free fish effluent to fertilize your soil gardens or fruit trees. (I have a quick fix to this problem if you dont feel like fabricating an in-line filter. Im going to do an entire post on it in the near future)
Let me know what you guys think and if you have any design inputs in the comments. I spend a lot of time making these and every model is to scale and every measurement is exact. You can literally open the file, use the measuring tool and get every exact measurement you need to build this unit. I will put the link to download the SketchUp file at the bottom of the post. If you choose to download the file or if you just like the blog and would like to see more stuff like this, please leave a comment or share the blog on one of the social media site links below. It really helps me out and the more the blog grows, the more cool stuff Ill be able to share with you. (Build it at your own risk of course, Im not your daddy nor am I responsible for you. These are just fancy drawings and I cant guarantee they will work, they are here to try to help you out in your aquaponic endeavors)
Hope you enjoy!
