Now while you can have an aquaponics system design look good on a piece of paper, if doesnt always mean its going to work how you intended when / if you actually build it. So if you are thinking about designing / building your own system, make sure you thoroughly research whatever design you are going with. Imagine every possible fail point and how each one can be avoided. Also, before you go full scale, build a small mock up system to test out your design. Get all the kinks out of the system before going full scale, it will save you a lot of headaches down the road.
I have hundreds of aquaponic system designs that I made on SketchUp that never made it past the old drawing board. Instead of just taking up space on my hard drive, I figured I might as well share them. What didnt work for me might possibly work for you. Maybe one of these designs will be the inspiration you need to make something even better.
This particular design utilizes 3/4" steal tubing for the frame. For the tank and grow bed supports straps, it uses 1.5" x 1/8" steal flat bar that is bent to match the contour of the 55 gallon drums. Its quite a bit of work considering you only get 6 Sq Ft of grow bed space, but it is pretty cool looking. As I post more and more of these archived prototypes, you will find that I like to incorporate an acrylic window on most of my designs. This is for a couple reasons; I like to be able to observe the fish and their behavior without opening the lid and disturbing them and because watching fish swim around is pretty cool. This design has a small viewing window in the front that is made of acrylic (not poly-carbonate!! I like BPA free systems). I left out most of the plumbing on this one but it could be plumbed fairly easy.
