March Aquaponics Update!

Hello all. I havent written a post in quite some time so I thought it would be appropriate to start things off again with a nice update. I currently have two systems running in my backyard (pictured above). The larger system, referred to as the GS-275, has a 275 gallon fiberglass fish tank with a large acrylic fish viewing window. It has a 4 x 8 fiberglass grow bed. The GS-275 has a custom built wood frame and a redwood tank cover. It is a media bed based bell siphon assisted, flood and drain type system.

I currently dont have too many plants in the GS-275. I am getting ready to plant my spring garden and will be doing some detailed posts from seed selection all the way to grow out in the aquaponic system. As of today, I have 2 spaghetti squash plants, 3 snap pee plants, some chive onions and a very young pepper plant. I harvested 6 beet root plant from the system this week and will post those pictures below.

The GS-275 is being powered by about 30 or so blue tilapia. They are about 7 months old and on average are about 4-6 inches long. There are a few that are significantly larger than the rest and a couple that are quite smaller. Through most of the winter I have kept the thermostat at 66 degrees fahrenheit. This has slowed their appetite and their growth quite a bit. Though, over the last couple of weeks we have been having some very warm weather. Because of this, I have increased the temperature back up to 72 degrees fahrenheit and their appetite and activity level have increased significantly. I also have recently added a small Plecostomus (Pleco - algae eater fish) to take care of the small amount of algae that develops on the fish viewing window.

The second of my two systems is referred to as the GS-64. It has a 64 gallon LDPE fish tank with a custom installed acrylic fish viewing window. The GS-64 has a redwood fish tank cover. The grow bed is 2 x 5 and is made of redwood lumber lined with a LDPE DuraSkrim liner. It is also a media bed based bell siphon assisted, flood and drain style system.

The GS-64 has two Mexican papaya trees and 3 strawberry plants in it. The papaya trees were planted on August 5th of 2014 and were about a foot tall. They have experienced exponential growth and are doing great. What is incredible is that they havent changed much since about November of 2014. They require abundant sun and heat and due to the fact the its winter, they have been receiving very little of each of those. I have weekly progress pictures of their growth and will soon do an entire post on them. The strawberry plants were planted around the same time and are just developing their first set of fruit which I should be able to start harvesting in the next couple of weeks.

My GS-64 is being powered by about 15 or so 7 month old goldfish. They are on average about 4-5 inches long and are growing a nice steady pace. I have added a Pleco to this system as well to handle the small amount of algae that I get on the fish viewing window.

So thats a brief overview of my current 2 systems running in the backyard. I have a lot of documentation of these systems and will be doing some very cool posts and videos in the near future. If you have any questions or comments on the systems please let me know in the comments section below. I hope you enjoyed this post and all the pictures!!!
